The Jetboat and the lYft

8/5/2022

We arrived in Portland by Amtrak Empire Builder train late morning on a beautiful hot and dry day.  We had been hesitant to schedule an outing on the first day in case the train did not arrive on time though we had our eye on a river cruise.  Unfortunately, that cruise was fully booked when we got to Portland.  We searched internet sites listing sightseeing possibilities and nothing caught our eye. So, we stopped at the hotel reception desk for suggestions.  The young lady suggested she might be able to reserve us a spot on a 2-river cruise. We jumped at the chance.

Part of traveling for 11 days on 2 planes, 3 trains with 4 hotels and an overnight visit with a sister is traveling light – a backpack and small bag each. There are no extra clothes or supplies.  After lunch I changed from my skirt into blue jean shorts and tucked my cell phone into the quart bag used for liquids on a plane.  Oh, I forgot to mention the 2-river cruise was on a jetboat. For those who have never enjoyed a jetboat tour – every rider will get soaked.  And how better to spend a 100-degree afternoon than playing on a river in a boat.

Here is where the LYFT comes in.  The easiest way to travel around a city, even one with convenient public transportation, is by LYFT or UBER.  The LYFT dropped us off at the appropriate address for jetboat. I chose a seat on the port-side gunnel near the bow of the boat – a place sure to experience every splashing wave over either the bow or the side!  In between the dousings, the captain explained the sights we passed along the river.  Our cruise was both informative and delightfully refreshing.  90 minutes later, I was weighed down with soaked t-shirt and jean shorts.  Even on a hot, arid afternoon the thought of drying the shorts before we took a LYFT back to our hotel was crazy. BTW, Alan was wearing a pair of fast-drying shorts so we did not need to worry about him.

We hailed a LYFT ride.  I was embarrassed to even think about getting into someone’s vehicle with only a thin plastic bag Alan gave me as protection between my shorts and the seat.  But what could I do?  Hang out on the street corner for a couple hours while I dried off?

The LYFT arrived and I was apologizing to the driver as I opened the back door and slid the plastic bag in with me.  To my surprise, there was a seat cover on the back seat!  Who would have thought!  Of the over a dozen LYFTs we used during our trip the only one with a seat covering was the one I really needed a seat covering!

And skeptics say God does not care about the little details of our lives!

Philippians 4:19   And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.
